The Power of Words: Fostering Compassionate Conversations
Language holds immense power, especially when discussing sensitive topics like brain health and suicide loss. At Mourning Glory, we are dedicated to fostering a healthier conversation by using terms that reflect understanding and compassion. Words shape our perceptions and influence how we relate to ourselves and others, making it crucial to choose them with care and empathy.
Moving Away from Stigmatizing Language
One of the most significant shifts in our approach involves eliminating the term "committed" when referring to suicide. Historically, this word has been used to describe crimes and wrongful acts, inadvertently criminalizing the actions of our loved ones who were struggling with their mental health. They did not commit a crime; they were battling an illness. By changing our language, we honor their memory and acknowledge the complexity of their struggle.
Embracing Supportive Terminology
At Mourning Glory, we emphasize terms that promote healing and understanding:
Suicide Loss Survivor: A person who has lost someone close to them to suicide. This term recognizes the profound impact of the loss and honors the resilience of those left behind.
Suicide Loss Supporter: A person who supports those affected by a suicide loss. This acknowledges the importance of community and the vital role supporters play in the healing journey.
Creating a Safe Space for Healing
Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment for suicide loss survivors and their supporters. By carefully choosing our words, we create a space where individuals feel understood and valued. This compassionate approach extends to our virtual group meetings and every interaction within our community, fostering connections that are built on empathy and mutual respect.
Join Our Mission
We invite you to be part of our mission to de-stigmatize suicide loss and support survivors on their healing journey. Whether you're a survivor or a supporter, your involvement makes a difference. Share your story, join our virtual group meetings, or simply spread the word about our mission. Together, we can create a more compassionate and understanding world for all.
Don't forget, even in the darkness of your mourning, your life is glorious.
