My Entry into the Community

Updated: Apr 13, 2021

Welcome! I am so happy you have found us. Seeing as we’re coming up on the 1 year anniversary of providing group therapy on Zoom to a test group of suicide loss survivors, I thought it would be a good time to start sharing my thoughts here about the growth we’ve discovered together and reflections from our sessions. But first I’d like to share my story on how I found the community.

Many family members and friends of those who die by suicide are left to deal with the aftermath of complex grief on their own with little or no support. Though I have always been interested in therapy, I never knew about the offerings in the community until I called the Suicide Prevention Center (SPC). I was quickly connected with Rick Mogul, the program director for suicide bereavement and did an intake with him. I was referred to a list of talk therapists who specialize in the field and was grateful to have the drop in to attend which met every Saturday at SPC at 11am.

Although I spent much of my first meetings crying my eyes out, what I found upon attending my first meeting was that I wasn’t alone. After losing my father for 2 and a half years, I had finally found a place where I felt comfortable sharing my story and was inspired by the courage of my fellow survivors to talk about some of their darkest moments with each other.

Since August of 2019, I have attended over 100 groups (over 285 hours) where in I have truly discovered the healing benefits of the suicide loss survivor community.
